Payne Family in the Flathead
Pearl Eaton and Clara Alice (Glass) Payne came to the Flathead by covered wagon on Thanksgiving day in 1903. They first settled in Kalispell and then later moved to a farm in what is now the Evergreen area. Two years later they moved to a farm southeast of Whitefish in the Grandview District and operated a truck garden there.
Pearl Eaton Payne was born in Union County, Ohio in 1861, the son of George Sumner Payne and Annice Eaton.
His given name was chosen by his mother who had lived with a family with the surname of Pearl while she attended college at Lake Erie, Ohio. He died 21 Jun 1935 in Whitefish, Montana. He and Clara Alice Glass, daughter of James Glass and Julia Shimel, were married in Sac County, Iowa in 1888.
After their marriage in 1888, Pearl and Clara moved to Norden, Keyapaha County, Nebraska and lived on homestead. Their first two children, Ralph and Pearlie, were born there. They then returned to Iowa for a few years and farmed and owned a store before returning to Nebraska. They lived on a tree claim, where Floyd was born near Sparks in 1902. Daisy was born after they arrived in Kalispell, Montana. All four of their children lived in the Whitefish area. Ralph is buried in the Whitefish Cemetery.
