Kalispell Hospital
Kalispell's first hospital; Opened 1896 by Ella Webber. Located on the corner of Center Street and Fourth Avenue East.
From book by Nancy Greer: Stories published in the Daily Interlake, 27 Jan 2008.
A woman doctor in 1918 lost a leg tending a patient on the roadside.
The nun nurses worried about bears invading their quarters or worked late washing towels for surety to save money during the depression.
A doctor in the early 1900's drove a buckboard to Eureka in six hours to tend to diptheria victims.
A doctor worked night and day for five days straight during the Spanish flue pandemic.
Doctors in the region included: E F Cunningham, Arthur Coe, Alexander MacDonald, John Sanders- All practiced in Demersville until Kalispell was incorporated.
The hospital charged $1 to $3 a day, depending on the room location and level of service provided by Webber and two servants. The patients received nursing, room, meals and laundry service. In the beginning the hospital was only available to men but in 1904 a large addition was completed and women were allowed. By 1905 the hospital closed due to lack of patients.
