Julius Bruyer came to America from Champagney, France with his parents 1856 at the age of 3. They lived in Chicago and then Dubuque, Iowa, before they bought a farm in Vermillion, South Dakota. Selling the farm, Julius and his wife,Susanna moved to the Flathead valley in 1901, leaving South Dakota and ending up north of Kalispell along Whitefish Stage road. They bought 280 acres for $14,000 and eight years after their arrival, Julius built a granary that still stands today (See Historical sites) Julius eventually owned more than 600 acres up and down Whitefish Stage Road, and they raised their five sons and a daughter there. Before his death, Julius gave each married son 160 acres passing on the family farming legacy to the next generation.
